5. Real examples (vendor-reported; not independently verified)

  • EvenUp customer quotes (vendor homepage): "75% faster attorney review and case assignment" (Micaela De La Cerda, Batta Fulkerson); "saved +3500 hours and increased our demand efficiency by 34%" (Edwin Saghian, Omega Law Group); "growth is up 400% compared to a year ago" (David Eltringham, ELG Injury Lawyers). Source: https://www.evenuplaw.com/ (verified 2026-10-15). These are testimonials the vendor chose to display.
  • Supio FAQ claims: "$500-1000 saved per case" and "one firm alone saved 437 hours across just six cases." Source: https://www.supio.com/ (verified 2026-10-15). Vendor-reported; no named firm on the page for this claim.
  • Lawmatics customer results (vendor page): Nesevich Law shown with a "400% revenue increase" figure and The Creator's Law Firm with a "25% increase in lead conversions"; the page text did not explain the measurement period. Source: https://www.lawmatics.com/pricing (verified 2026-10-15). Treat as marketing claims.
  • Ethics guidance example: In Mata v. Avianca (S.D.N.Y. 2023) a federal judge sanctioned lawyers for AI-generated false citations, as cited in Florida Bar Opinion 24-1. Source: https://www.floridabar.org/etopinions/opinion-24-1/ (verified 2026-10-15).

7. What NOT to do / compliance (informational only; not legal advice)

⚠ What NOT to do / compliance (informational only; not legal advice)

  • Do not paste confidential client information into a tool you have not vetted. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 29, 2024) says lawyers must evaluate the risk that information entered into a generative AI tool could be disclosed or accessed by others, should read the tool's terms of use and privacy policy, and that informed consent is required before inputting client information into self-learning tools; boilerplate engagement-letter language is not sufficient. Source: https://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/administrative/professional_responsibility/ethics-opinions/aba-formal-opinion-512.pdf (verified 2026-10-15).
  • Do not file AI output you have not verified. Opinion 512 says uncritical reliance on GAI output can violate the duty of competence (Rule 1.1), and lawyers must review output before submitting to a court (Rules 3.1, 3.3, 8.4(c)). Check local court rules on AI disclosure. Same source.
  • Do not leave AI to give legal advice or negotiate claims. Opinion 512 says lawyers may not leave it to GAI tools alone to offer legal advice or negotiate clients' claims. Same source. Florida Opinion 24-1 likewise says a lawyer may not delegate negotiation of claims or any function that requires the lawyer's personal judgment. Source: https://www.floridabar.org/etopinions/opinion-24-1/ (verified 2026-10-15).
  • Do not bill clients for time you did not spend, or for learning the tool. Opinion 512: hourly billing must reflect actual time; a lawyer generally may not bill a client to learn a tool they will use regularly; flat or contingent fees must still be reasonable. Same ABA source.
  • Disclose that intake chatbots are AI. Florida Opinion 24-1 says chatbots that communicate with prospective clients must disclose they are an AI program, not a lawyer or employee, and warns that a chatbot can create a prospective-client relationship without the lawyer's knowledge. Same Florida source.
  • Do not claim your AI is "better" unless objectively verifiable (Florida Opinion 24-1, advertising). Same source.
  • Have a firm policy and train staff. Opinion 512 says managerial lawyers must establish clear policies on permissible GAI use and ensure training. Same ABA source. Summary of the opinion: https://www.americanbar.org/news/abanews/aba-news-archives/2024/07/aba-issues-first-ethics-guidance-ai-tools/ (verified 2026-10-15).
  • Medical records in PI files: vendors above that handle medical records state HIPAA-related compliance or a business associate agreement (Clio PI add-on, EvenUp, Supio). Confirm in writing with the vendor before uploading records.

Consult your state bar's rules and your own ethics counsel. State rules vary.

  1. 1. Does a person or system answer every inbound call, including after hours? (1.3, 1.4)

  3. 3. Are new leads scored or screened automatically before an attorney sees them? (2.1, 2.2, 3.4)
  4. 4. Do you use a tool to build medical chronologies or summarize records? (2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2)

Personal injury law AI FAQ

Is it ethical for personal injury lawyers to use AI?

ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 29, 2024) and Florida Bar Opinion 24-1 both say lawyers may use generative AI if they meet duties of competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision, candor and reasonable fees. This is informational, not legal advice; check your state bar.

Do I need client consent before using AI on a case?

ABA Formal Opinion 512 says informed consent is required before inputting client information into self-learning generative AI tools whose output could disclose it, and that generic engagement-letter language is not enough. Whether consent is needed depends on the tool and facts.

What does AI cost for a small PI firm?

Published prices in this checklist: Clio from $49 per user per month, MyCase $50 to $130 per user per month (annual), Smith.ai from $300 per month for 30 calls, Otter Pro $16.99 per user per month. Case-specific tools such as EvenUp and Supio do not publish pricing.

Can AI chatbots handle intake on my website?

Florida Opinion 24-1 says an intake chatbot must disclose it is AI and not a lawyer, should not give legal advice, and can create a prospective-client relationship; Clio Grow AI and Smith.ai are examples of intake tools.

Can I bill clients for time saved by AI?

Under ABA Formal Opinion 512, hourly billing must reflect actual time spent, and flat or contingent fees must remain reasonable even if AI makes the work faster.

Do these AI tools handle medical records safely?

EvenUp and Supio state SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance, and Clio lists a business associate agreement for its PI add-on. Those are vendor statements; confirm in a signed agreement.
